What is Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a free web analytics tool that provides valuable insights to your website by gathering and analyzing information about the traffic and visitors to your website.

Do you really need Google Analytics?

If you are working hard on the marketing efforts for your business, Google Analytics will do you a great favor. It helps you measure traffic patterns such as the demographics of your visitors, the websites they came from, individual page traffic, the amount of leads converted — the list goes on. With all this data, you’ll be able to make greater cost-saving marketing decisions that will effectively increase the digital presence of your business.

How to set up Google Analytics in 3 simple steps

Here are three simple steps of getting started with Google Analytics.

Step 1: Sign up for Google Analytics

To get started, you will need an email linked to a Google account (GA), such as Gmail. Use this email to create a GA account on www.google.com/analytics.

Step 2: Add your Tracking Code to every page of your website

Next, you’ll need to manually add your Google Analytics tracking code to your website pages. Navigate to the “Admin” page from your Google Analytics Home screen, located in the bottom- left corner of the Dashboard. Look for the tracking ID code and add this to each page of your website.

Step 3: Set up goals

After adding the tracking code on your website, you can now set your website goals on your Google Analytics profile. Creating goals is about setting metrics that matter the most as they contribute to your business’ growth. Under the Admin link, click on Goals under your website’s View column, and ‘Add New Goal’.

If you are not sure what each metric in Google Analytic does, you’ll first need to understand them.

Google Analytics Metrics

Here’s a quick run-down of the terms you’ll need to set goals and understand your Google Analytics reports.

Now that you’ve learnt the basics of GA metrics, you’re good to go! You can start navigating and explore all the features on Google Analytics. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Grant access to your team: If you’re working with a team, grant permissions to make sure other people can access the Google Analytics data.
  2. Set up Views: You can set up Views so that you will only see the data and metrics which matter to you. For example, you could have a View that helps you only see the Conversions from your target market.
  3. Link Google Ads with Google Analytics: If your business uses Google Ads, you can link this to your Google Analytics account to see how visitors interact with your marketer (eg. clicking ads) and how they finally make purchases or consume content. By linking your accounts together, you’ll have more information to help you determine the effectiveness of your ad campaigns.
