What is SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of optimizing your content so that a search engine picks it up and shows it as one of the top results for searches.

How do most search engines work?

Let’s use Google as an example. When you perform a search on Google, their bot starts crawling on hundred billions of pages to find results that will best answer your search. So what does the Google web crawler look out for?

First, it looks for pages that are relevant and closely related to the searched keyword. Next, Google judges the credibility of the articles by looking at the number of other pages that link to that page. Then, Google identifies the usefulness of an article by noticing how users interact with the search results, which means that if your content has high traffic or user interaction, it will get a boost in ranking.

All you have to do is to make sure that a search engine sees your site as the best result for a person’s search.

Here are 5 tips to get you going!

  1. Identify highly-effective keywords

Begin by researching for commonly searched keywords related to the topic you are about to write. You may use keyword research tools such as Ahrefs, to identify keywords with high search volumes and click rates.

2. Utilize keywords in your headings and throughout your post

Start crafting your post and subtly add those keywords you identified throughout. But be careful not to fill your content with so many keywords that it loses your audience.

3. Internal link: Hyperlink words or phrases to other pages within your site

While writing your post, link some words and phrases to other relevant posts within your website. If your page gets a lot of links, it signals to the search engine that it is a high-value article.

4. External link: Link to influential websites

To improve the credibility of your website, link relevant external sites to your website, and try to get influential external websites to link back to your site. Make sure you’re adding relevant, authoritative sites instead of spam links that will do more harm than good.

5. Write good meta descriptions

Meta descriptions are the 1–3 liner descriptions underneath the title of a result. Having a good meta description will attract readers and increase the click-through rate (CTR) of your site, a metric that Google uses to determine your page rank in the search results.

These are just some basic steps to get you going. Once you have mastered the foundation, make sure to check out the more advanced levels of SEO.
